Effective Practices for Nontraditional Students
Canada College, SOLES Project (Student On-ramp Leading to Engineering and Sciences)
The SOLES project aims to maximize the likelihood of success among
underrepresented and educationally disadvantaged students interested
in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) fields. The project is supported by a grant from
the US Department of Education through the Minority Science and
Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP). SOLE components include:
- The Summer Math Jam: a two-week intensive preparation for the Math
Placement Test
- The Summer Engineering Institute: a two-week residential summer
camp to provide real-world context to the study of engineering
- A student-centered model of Academic Counseling and Mentoring
- A series of Personal and Professional Development activities
designed to develop knowledge and attributes needed to be a
successful STEM student.
- Strong Academic Support Services through student clustering in key
STEM courses, Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs), and tutoring.
