English as a Second Language Woman Student wins Scholarship at Canada

Natalia Vasilyeva and Tiara Smith

Tiara Smith and Natalia Vasilyeva, two accounting students at Cañada College, have each received $500 scholarships from CalCPA.org, the statewide association of certified public accountants. Both students are planning to use the money to further their studies. “My goal is to get a BA degree in accounting,” said Smith. “I plan to transfer to Sacramento State to earn my degree and after that I’m considering pursuing my certified public accounting license.” Vasilyeva is a Russian immigrant who has been living in the U.S. for three years. She came to Cañada last spring to take English as a Second Language classes and study Accounting. She has degrees in economics and marketing and management. “My goal is to improve my English and earn a certificate in a field similar to my previous education and work experience that I had in Russia.” Smith said she started studying psychology at Cañada but switched to accounting after taking a class a year ago. “The class really worked on me as a student and I enjoyed the critical thinking so I wanted to further my knowledge in the field,” she said. Smith said she is open to working in either the public or private sector. “If I get my BA in accounting I would like to do budgeting or payroll for an organization,” she said. “If I become a CPA, I will open my own auditing firm in order to provide audits to different organizations.” Vasilyeva said, “I am taking accounting classes at Cañada College in order to satisfy the requirements of the California Accounting Board prior to taking the CPA Exam”. While she continues her studies, she is looking for a part-time job working under the supervision of a CPA. “Passing the CPA exam will be a big step for me, and after that I will be interested to work in either the private industry or public accounting”, she said. Vasilyeva stated, “I would recommend every freshman interested in accounting to take professor Leonor Cabrera’s classes. There is something more than just the knowledge of the subject you receive attending her classes; she transmits the passion she has of accounting to her students. She wants you to succeed, and I enjoyed her classes a lot. She is the best teacher I have had in all my years of studying.”
