College of the Desert (COD) has partnered with the Girl Friend Factor to present a seminar on Jan. 13 to motivate women to return to college. Going Back to School and Still Having A Life is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Career Transfer Center in the Administration Bldg. on the COD campus. The Girl Friend Factor is a local women’s organization that encourages women to return to college in order for them to realize self sufficiency and financial advancement. The Go Girl Campaign has proclaimed January to be National Go Education Month. This seminar is also a recruitment event for the Reentry Program at the College of the Desert. After several years, the program for students who are 25 and older (both men and women) was reinstated. Thirty-one students successfully completed the class which fulfills a general education requirement to transfer to a California State University. For those who have considered returning to college, this is the ideal class. A prerequisite is not required to register for the class and it is a safe environment with others who have experienced life and are ready to pursue the dream of a college education. In addition, many motivational speakers are invited to make class presentations. Last semester, several professionals from the Betty Ford Center spoke on topics such as Self Esteem and Relationships. The class is based on positive thinking and success as well as Career and Life Planning and Personal Exploration. The class is taught by a counselor who is the Coordinator of the Career Center. Eve-Marie Andrews started college at the age of 52 and is very sensitive to the needs of returning students. Because of her personal experience as a “mature” student, she developed this class about four years ago to encourage others to return to college. Call Margo Capuano to reserve a seat (760) 862-1351.
